Graph Model Suggests Social Diversity Promotes Emergence of Cooperation

Three European scientists have introduced the idea of diversity into models of social networks, using graphs in which individuals occupy the vertices while links define group sizes and the social structures of a population. Their mathematical model suggests that acts of cooperation may depend on one's social context or ranking. Diversity becomes associated with meeting the greater good of the group. And an individual's contribution to each act of the public good leads to more altruism.

Welcome to the new MathDL!

This site combines the earlier MathDL and Math Gateway sites and is now the Mathematical Association of America's Mathematics Pathway within the National Science Digital Library. From the MathDL homepage, you may search the resources of the MathDL Partners.

The new online publication Loci continues the tradition of the three earlier online publications, the Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications, Digital Classroom Resources, and Convergence. Materials that appeared in the three earlier online publications may be accessed through Loci: Archives.

MAA Reviews, with listings and reviews of thosands of mathematical books, and Classroom Capsules and Notes, providing pdf copies of classroom notes from the three print publications of the MAA, are now part of MAA Online. In general, these publications are restricted to MAA members or subscribers. However, to celebrate the debut of the new MathDL, these resources are free to everyone until the middle of August. See what you will be missing if you are not a member of MAA or a subscriber to these resources!
