Loci

ISSN 1941-9198

Welcome to Loci. This online publication of the Mathematical Association of America continues the tradition started by the separate online publications: The Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications (JOMA), Digital Classroom Resources (DCR), and Convergence. The new structure divides the content between articles and resources with Convergence now a special section within Loci. The Archive link gives access to materials in each of the three original publications. There are also links to the archived pages from Communications in Visual Mathematics.

Not only does Loci continue Convergence with the section Loci: Convergence and Digital Classroom Resources with Loci: Resources, but also Loci itself is a continuation of the Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications (JOMA). To emphasize this continuation, some of the initial spotlights in Loci are recent JOMA articles.

We are looking for an editor for Loci. More details

Loci: Convergence
Convergence provides a wealth of resources to help teach mathematics using its history.

Loci: Resources
Resources provides a select collection of free online learning materials which are available through the site. These materials have been classroom tested and peer reviewed.

Featured Items:

Modeling a Changing World

Events in our world are often modeled with differential equations. This article develops numerical solvers for ODEs. Interactive applets explore topics including slope fields and numerically solving definite integrals and differential equations.

Chemical Graph Theory

Chemical Graph theory is used to model physical properties of molecules called alkanes. Java applets allow for interactive exploration of molecules. A student project and discussion of its application are included, along with spreadsheets of model data.

Mathematical Brooding over an Egg

This article explores how mathematical techniques, digital images, and dynamic geometry software can be used to analyze a real-world situation originating from poultry science. The topic is mathematical modeling of the shape of an egg, where the underlying question is: What is the volume and surface area of a hen's egg?"

How to Gamble if You Must

This article explores the strategies of timid play and bold play in the game of red and black

The Most Marvelous Theorem in Mathematics

From: Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications

Marden's Theorem concerns the relative positions of the roots of a cubic polynomial and those of its derivative. This article gives a proof of Marden's theorem, along with dynamic geometry animations and some of the history of the result.

Integer Programming Model for the Sudoku Problem

From: Journal of Online Mathematics and its Applications

Let binary integer linear programming solve Sudoku puzzles and variations on the game for you. Also, learn to prove theorems regarding puzzle creation. Java applets allow for interactive exploration, and exercises and challenge problems are included.

Report Problems, Make Suggestions

Loci is a new publication being delivered on a newly-revised MathDL content management system. While we have done extensive testing, some problems are still likely to be present. If you see one of these, please send an email to the MAA Webmaster

For suggestions for changes in the design or presentation of Loci, contact the MathDL Executive Editor, Lang Moore.
